Cleansers need to be gentle.  And don’t be fooled by things that say “gentle”, “hypoallergenic”, “non-comedogenic” – a lot of the time they contain extremely harsh detergents, silicones, dyes and preservatives. We want our cleansers to gently remove excess oil and the dirt without compromising the skin’s natural balance.

To keep things simple and balanced use a truly gentle cleanser that does not make your face feel taut after washing.  If it does, you need something even gentler.  This is one of my favorite home remedies for clear skin.

 

Raw Honey Cleanser

  • 1 t of baking soda
  • 1 t of raw honey
  • mix together into a paste and massage into damp skin for 1 minute
  • rinse with warm water & finish with a cold splash

 

Moisturize for Perfection

One of the best moisturizers is oil!  And this may be scary for some of you, but using pure oils maintains the pH balance and will make your skin less oily.  It also gives you a glow, keeps the skin well hydrated, can double as a SPF, are anti-inflammatory and have antioxidant properties.  What a package deal right!

  • For radiant, glowing, fully moisturized skin from face to toe- go for coconut oil.  Be sure to look for high quality coconut oil with the words “organic”, “unrefined” and “virgin”.

 

Spot Treatment From the Kitchen

The lemon does so many wonderful things for our health, but now it can be your spot treatment too.  Its alkalizing nature can kill some of the bacteria associated with acne.

  • Apply fresh lemon juice on acne and leave it overnight. Rinse with water the following morning. There may be an uncomfortable sensation of burning at first, but it will soon disappear.
  • Mix one part of freshly squeezed lemon juice with an equal part of honey water. Put the mixture on affected areas for at least half an hour then rinse with water.

 

Another great home remedy for spot and acne issues is to use apple cider vinegar! Apple cider vinegar is not only affordable and all-natural, it’s also Scarlett Johansson’s skin care secret! ScarJo says she uses ACV for a face wash and she finds it really helpful in healing skin that’s breaking out. Ladies with normal skin can dab some ACV on the blemish before going to sleep and those with sensitive skin can mix Apple Cider Vinegar with water.

 

Minimize Those Pores

Here is a skin care remedy for those who want to minimize the appearance of their pores. It ‘s as easy as opening your fridge! Get half of a seeded, medium-sized tomato and a tablespoon of plain yogurt. Toss the tomato into the blender and blend until it’s pureed. Next, mix in the yogurt and apply it to your skin. Leave it on for 5-10 minutes, gently rinse off and follow up with a moisturizer!

 

Dry Skin and Hair

Avocados are amazing for dry skin and hair, so I had to include it in one of the skin care remedies.

Grab a ripe avocado and cut it in half and get ¼ cup of honey. Mash the avocado in a bowl and pour in the honey. Apply the mixture all over your face and wait 10 minutes before rinsing off with a cool washcloth. You can also mix one avocado and 2 tablespoons of honey and apply it to your hair for 20-30 minutes for a hydrating hair mask!

 

Remove Those Dead Skin Cells

I love making scrubs because they’re one of the easiest skin care remedies to make. This sea salt scrub only requires a cup of sea salt and a ½ cup of baby oil. Mix the two ingredients together and place it in a jar with a lid. Leave the mixture in the jar for 24 hours. Stir the mixture again and apply it to your body to exfoliate and gently remove dead skin cells!

 

Aloe Vera For Eczema

Aloe vera is a really versatile plant and you can use it to treat a number of skin care issues such as burns, acne and to moisturize skin. Another unique way to use aloe vera is to treat eczema. The aloe vera plant contains anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial agents that are very helpful in treating several skin care issues. Get pure aloe vera gel or cut open a leaf from the plant and apply it to the affected areas.

 

Banish The Shine – Oily Skin

Having oily skin can be challenging in the warmer weather but hopefully this next skin care remedy can help you banish the shine! Take a small amount of baking soda and add some water (enough to make a paste). Mix the two together, apply it to your face and rinse off. Baking soda is said to help neutralize your skin’s pH and it helps get rid of blackheads, also!

I know some of these skin care remedies sound a little strange. I have to admit using a banana peel for your skin just seems wacky, but let’s not knock it until we try it! Rubbing the inside of a banana peel on your skin until the peel turns brown is said to help soothe dry skin and treat acne as well as help heal acne scars and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles! For best results, use ripe banana peels and apply it 2-3x per day.

Combine 2 tbsp of sour cream with 2 tbsp of honey and 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. Apply the mixture to your cleansed face and leave it on for 20 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water followed by a cool rinse. You can use this facial up to two times a week!

Today, we’re going to talk about 6 great tips for chronic pain. Some of these chronic pain techniques you may have heard, others perhaps not. I just want you to keep an open mind and give it a chance. You may just be surprised how they can help you manage your chronic pain. Although further research is needed before any of these remedies can be recommended as a standard treatment for back pain, some of them may offer relief for mild to moderate back pain, particularly when part of a comprehensive treatment plan by your doctor.

1. Massage therapy for instant relief. A massage can work wonders for your pain, giving you instant pain relief from back pain, neck pain, arm pain or leg pain. Massage has always been a used technique in alternative medicine. Studies have shown that massage used with exercise can be a useful tactic at easing pain. If you’re lucky, you may have a willing partner to help give you a massage when needed. If not, you may wish to consider paying for it or buying some type of massage chair or wand.

2. See a chiropractor. Back pain is one of most common reasons people visit a chiropractor. Doctors of chiropractic use chiropractic spinal manipulation to restore joint mobility. 3. Try using capsaicin cream.  Although I’m sure many of you have never heard of capsaicin before, if you’ve ever eaten a chili pepper and felt your mouth burn, you know exactly what capsaicin does. Capsaicin is the active ingredient in chili peppers. When it is applied to the skin, capsaicin has been found to deplete substance P – a neurochemical that transmits pain – causing an analgesic effect.

For a 2011 research review published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia, investigators sized up the available research on the use of topically applied capsaicin in treatment of several types of chronic pain. This included two clinical trials on back pain, both of which found that capsaicin helped reduce low back pain without causing notable side effects.

Capsaicin cream, also called capsicum cream, is available in drug stores, health food stores, and online. A typical dosage is 0.025% capsaicin cream applied four times a day. The most common side effect is a stinging or burning sensation in the area. If possible, wear disposable gloves (available at drugstores) before applying the cream. Be careful not to touch the eye area or open skin. A tube or jar of capsaicin cream typically costs between $8 and $25.

4. Give acupuncture a try.  Acupuncturists insert hair-thin needles into the skin at specific points around the body. It is virtually painless when done by an experienced practitioner. Inserting the needles is thought to correct imbalances in the flow of energy in the body, called qi (pronounced “chee”). As I write in the April issue of the Harvard Men’s Health Watch, in Western scientific terms acupuncture is thought to ease pain by affecting neurotransmitters, hormone levels, or the immune system.

Just how does acupuncture work? According to traditional Chinese medicine, pain results from blocked energy along energy pathways of the body, which are unblocked when acupuncture needles are inserted along these invisible pathways. Acupuncture may release natural pain-relieving opioids, send signals to the sympathetic nervous system, and release neurochemicals and hormones.

5. Get plenty of Vitamin D. Chronic muscle pain can be a symptom of vitamin D deficiency. What’s more, some research suggests that treatment with vitamin D supplements may lead to clinical improvement in back pain symptoms among people with low initial concentrations of vitamin D. I recommend Vitamin D to all my chronic pain patients and I’ve seen first hand how it can help with chronic pain.

An essential nutrient available in certain foods (such as fortified milk and fish with small bones), vitamin D is produced naturally by the body during exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays. But since it’s difficult to obtain your recommended daily intake of D solely through dietary sources and sun exposure, many medical experts recommend increasing your vitamin D levels by taking a dietary supplement.

6. Yoga is a great healthy tool. Yoga creates balance in the body through various poses that develop flexibility and strength. There’s some evidence that taking up a yoga practice may help relieve back pain. I highly recommend yoga to all my patients because of the many health benefits it has.

For a 2011 research review published in Clinical Rheumatology, investigators looked at seven clinical trials that tested the effects of yoga in patients in with low back pain. Of those studies, five suggested that yoga leads to a significantly greater reduction in low back pain than usual care, education, or conventional therapeutic exercises. However, the other two studies showed that yoga was no more effective than other types of care for low back pain.

If your like me, you feel like you’ve been struck by a train. Getting a full 8 hours of sleep is so critical for reliving pain and the healing process. I know it’s hard and perhaps impossible but you have to try. Make an effort to get 8 hours of sleep and let me know how you feel when you wake up, I bet you feel a lot better.

4. Go for a massage. This is my personal favorite. A great massage can work wonders for your body. If you’re looking for natural pain relievers to instantly take your pain away, this is it. Hopefully, you have a spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend to help you. If you don’t, there is a number of different machines out there to help you. If you have back pain, they have the chair you sit in. So, you do have options.

5. The value of stretching daily. How long has it been since you spent 20 minutes stretching? If it has been a long time, this natural pain reliever works like a charm. I recommend that you stretch at least 2 times a day for 20 minutes a session. Please note, it can take weeks for you to get your body and back fully stretched. Don’t give up after a few days. Herniated DiscThere are a number of different terms used to describe spinal disc pathology and associated pain, such as herniated disc, pinched nerves, and bulging disc, and all terms are used differently by doctors. Many healthcare professionals do not agree on a specific definition of any of these terms, and patients may be frustrated when they hear their diagnosis referred to in different terms. A variety of interchangeable terms (ruptured disc, torn disc, slipped disc, collapsed disc, disc protrusion, disc disease, only add to the confusion. We wish the terminology was more precise and simpler but it’s not. For someone that isn’t advanced in their medical terminology, it could be like reading a foreign language.

Two Causes of Back Pain: Disc Pain And Pinched Nerves

When trying to determine the cause of a patient’s pain, there’s usually (2) types of spinal disc conditions used. Referring to pinched nerves, the spinal disc is not the cause of the pain, rather it’s the nerve that is being pressured. This produces pain that we refer to as nerve root pain or radicular pain. If the pain is described in the lower back, pain that radiates down the back of the leg, this is often called sciatica.

When referring to disc pain, this is when a patient has symptomatic degenerative disc. Due to the mobility of the lower back among other things, we typically see this in the lower back. With this condition, the disc space is the cause and source of the pain, also known as axial pain.

Either of the above two conditions can occur in the cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine. They tend to be most common in the lower back because the lower back bears the most torque and force on a day to day basis.

It should be kept in mind that all the terms – herniated disc, bulging disc, pinched nerves, slipped disc, ruptured disc, etc. – refer to radiographic findings seen on a CT scan or MRI scan. While these test results are important, they are not as meaningful in determining the cause of the pain as the patient’s specific symptoms and the doctor’s physical exam results.

If you want to hit your biceps from every angle, add these four techniques from Gaddour to your workout routine. Are you ready for sleeve-busting muscle?

Close-Grip Negative Chinup: Stand on a box or bench beneath a chinup bar. Grab the bar with your palms facing you and your hands only two to four inches apart. Jump up, pulling your chest to the bar. Hold the top position for 2 seconds, and then take 3 to 5 seconds to lower yourself until your feet touch the box. That’s one rep. Do 3 sets of 3 to 5 reps. Take 2 minutes rest between sets. Increase the difficulty over time by adding a weight vest, chains, or a dip belt.

Isometric Chinups: Follow your negative chinups with two isometric versions. First, hold the top position of the chinup—when your chest is close to the bar and your arms are flexed—for as long as you can. Rest for 2 minutes, and then hang from the bar with your arms at a 90-degree angle. Hold this position for as long as you can.

Dumbbell Curl and Eccentric Curl: Select a weight you can typically curl for 10 to 15 reps.  Stand, letting the weights hang next to your side. Turn your arms so that your palms face forward. Without moving your upper arms, bend your elbows and curl the dumbbells as close to your shoulders as you can. Pause, and slowly lower the weight back to the starting position. When you can’t do anymore reps of the classic curl, start curls where you focus on the lowering portion of the move only. Thrust your hips forward to power the weights back up to your chest. Lower the weight, but take at least 5 seconds to do so. Complete as many reps as you can, trying to match the same number of classic curls. Rest for 2 minutes and repeat.

The Biceps Finisher: Stop at the middle position of a curl with your arms bent at 90-degree angles. Hold this for 30 seconds, and then immediately perform as many full-range curls as you can. When you can’t do any more, let the weights hang at your sides and walk for as long as you can. Keep your core braced and your shoulders pulled down and away from your ears the entire time.

There’s a lot of different great ways to stay healthy and live a life of longevity and vitality. I’m sure you’ve seen a thousand articles on the topic online and probably even more in magazines and books. We don’t think about when we’re younger and we think we can do anything with our body. Unfortunately, we find out years later that our body must be taken care of in order to feel good. If you’re wondering why you don’t feel good, feel tired all the time or hurt, in many cases, it can point back to your lifestyle. In a age where technology gives us comfort and ease, we’re seeing obesity at a younger age and it’s alarming. So today, we’re going to share some great tips on staying healthy.

1. Educate yourself at a young age. Ever wish you would have took better care of your body when you were younger? Same here. Why didn’t we? Did your parents talk about health when you were younger? Did your teacher teach you the importance of fitness? More then likely, you’ve heard it from somewhere. The problem, kids just don’t listen. You have to embed the importance of a healthy lifestyle time and time again. Education and learning is power. Teach your children or grandchildren at an early age. Make sure they eat good. For those of you that are older, it’s never too late to start getting healthy.

2. Make sure you exercise daily. Studies are showing that we don’t exercise anymore, kids are not exercising. Technology is one of the concerns for the issue. If you have children, make them go outside and play daily. At the very least, they should be active for an hour a day. That is the bottom line. Same for you mom and dad, exercise should be part of your normal daily routine. Daily exercise has a variety of different benefits. As you age, the need for daily exercise arises. Even if it’s just walking, get out there and do it. Although you should be active for an hour at the very least too, any type of exercise will be helpful to you. I know it’s tough finding time to exercise with work and kids. However, your body needs it.

3. All about eating healthy foods. A lot of men and women believe that exercise is all you need to lose weight or to be healthy. That statement is completely false. Not true at all. You can actually lose more weight eating healthy then exercising. The combination of both is what helps you get the best results though. I just don’t want you to eat healthy here and there. Eating healthy should be a part of your daily routine, breakfast, lunch, afternoon and dinner.

4. Get your full 8 hours in. Time is money and money is time, right? Yes, that may be true but sleep is so important to feeling great and living healthy. I know for many for many of you, 8 hours a sleep will never happen. You may have a demanding job, possibly two jobs. You could have children or a busy schedule. I know it can be tough. You still need to try to get your 8 hours of sleep in every night. Your body is a biological clock. If you’re getting proper sleep, you likely wake up and sleep around the same time everyday. If your not on a routine, your likely up at a variety of different times. Try your best to make an effort to get a full 8 hours of sleep. At the least, try to get an extra hour or two then you normally do. You’ll be surprised how much better you feel. Sleep is a great healthy living tip.

5. Drink water everyday. A lot of people do drink water according to studies and that is great. Are they drinking 8 cups a day? Most people are not. If your drinking water daily though, good for you. Our body is made up of water and needs water on a daily basis. Yes, it is recommended that you have 8 cups of water a day. This may seem like a lot but it really isn’t. If you’re not drinking water at all, you need to start immediately. I know men and women that started drinking water daily and felt much better within a few short days. Make water part of your game plan today.

6. Stay away from soda and pop. We go through a lot of soda and pop ladies and gentlemen. Soda and pop is very bad for you. The best outcome is to replace your soda with water.
