Cervical Osteoarthritis-Causes-Symptoms-Risk-Treatments

Cervical Osteoarthritis-Causes-Symptoms-Risk-Treatments

Cervical OsteoarthritisThere’s a variety of different things that can cause cervical osteoarthritis. Cervical osteoarthritis is also called cervical spondylosis. It is a condition involving changes to the disc, bones and joints of the neck. Such changes are caused by the normal wear and tear of aging. As we age, the discs of the cervical spine wear and break down, losing fluid, and becoming more solid. Cervical osteoarthritis often occurs in men and women 50 or older.

One or more nerve roots can be compressed by the degeneration of cervical spine discs. The compressed nerves can cause a number of different symptoms, such as arm pain, weakness, tingling and numbness. It also causes neck pain that can range in minor to extreme.

Aging is the major risk factor or cause of neck arthritis. Even so, neck injuries can contribute to the arthritis years down the road. The wear and tear that is caused by aging can result in a number of different changes. Dehydrated discs results in your disc shrinking. This causes bone-on-bone contact between vertebrate. Disk dehydration begins around age 40. Bone spurs are another related condition. Bone spurs refer to the extra bone that is produced by degeneration. Herniated disc are caused by aged cracks in the disc that result in bulges or ruptured disc pressing on your nerves or spinal chord.

Symptoms of Cervical Arthritis

Early stages of neck arthritis are usually unnoticed. Very few ever feel symptoms from early neck arthritis. When symptoms do occur, the neck is the primary center of pain. Cervical osteoarthritis can portray a number of different symptoms.

  • Severe pain at the end of the day
  • Pain that radiates between your shoulder blades into the shoulders
  • Pain moves from the neck down the arm and shoulder
  • Feel grinding when moving your neck
  • More then normal headaches
  • Numbness in your arms, fingers or hands
  • Weakness in your arms, shoulders, hands

Diagnosing Cervical Spondylosis

When diagnosing cervical spondylosis, there’s a number of factors that need tested and examined. Both physical and diagnostics can help determine if arthritis is the source of the symptoms you’re experiencing. A physical exam is very likely to be performed. Your doctor may ask what level of pain or discomfort you are in.  He or she will examine your neck, see what type of range of motion you have, while also checking for weakness in the arms. A complete medical history can also be used to aide your doctor. Your doctor will likely run test on your neck, such as X-rays, CT scans or perhaps a MRI if needed.

Risk Factors for Neck Osteoarthritis

There are a number of risk factors for neck osteoarthritis. The main risk factor is aging. Genetic risk factors and neck injuries are also important risk factors to note. If you have a job that requires a lot of movement, this can become a risk for you. Due to the location, all these risk are valid, serious and should be kept in mind.

Possible Treatments Of Cervical Osteoarthritis

A number of medical, physical and surgical treatments are available for neck arthritis depending on the level of pain, discomfort and type of degeneration present.

1. Medications both over the counter (for milder symptoms) and prescribed (for more chronic pain) are available.

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS),
  • Non-narcotic analgesics,
  • Corticosteroid injections,
  • Muscle relaxants, including cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril, Amrix) and methocarbamol (Robaxin) may be required for more severe pain management.
  • Narcotic analgesics, such as hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab) or oxycodone (Percoset, Roxicet) are also prescribed for more severe pain.
  • Anti-seizure drugs including some types of epilepsy drugs such as gabapentin (Neurontin, Gralise) and pregabalin (Lyrica) will relieve the pain caused by damaged nerves.

2. Therapy both with a therapist and at home can strengthen muscles relieving neck pain and providing increased mobility.

  • A therapist can teach a patient exercises designed to strengthen and stretch neck and shoulder muscles.
  • Traction is of benefit to some patients suffering from pinched nerves as this therapy can provide more room between disks relieving the pinched nerve.
  • Regular massage is helpful for pain management and regaining mobility.
  • Regular exercise at home can maintain muscle strength relieving pain.
  • Heating or icing the neck can relieve stiff muscles and reduce pain and inflammation.
  • A soft neck brace will allow neck muscles to rest and provide some relief but it should only be a short-term solution as it can weaken muscles over time.

3. Surgery is a last resort option when none of the above options provide adequate pain and mobility relief. It is used in order to provide more room for the spinal chord and nerve roots thus relieving pinching and compression of the nerves. Surgery always comes with inherent risks so it is used as a last resort option.

  • A herniated disk or bone spurs may be removed.
  • Part of a vetebra may be removed.

Age invariably brings with it degeneration of bodily systems including bone. Arthritis is a common ailment of the elderly and in rarer cases with the very young. Maintaining an active lifestyle, focusing on proper posture and eating a healthy well-balanced diet is key to reducing and slowing the ravages of the aging process. It is inevitable that our bodies will wear with age but how fast and to what degree can be controlled to some degree by maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Back Pain Treatments-Teeter Hang Ups

Back Pain Treatments-Teeter Hang Ups

Teeter Hang Ups

Relieve Back Pain

Unlike surgery, mechanical traction, and other invasive forms of treatment, using a Teeter is a gentle, passive way to target pain at the source and care for all weight-bearing joints. Inversion is a natural, progressive form of traction that decompresses each joint with the same weight that compresses it while upright. To put it simply, inverted decompression targets back pain by helping to 1) rehydrate discs, 2) reduce nerve pressure, 3) realign the spine and 4) relax tense muscles. Best of all, stretching on a Teeter feels great and takes only a few minutes a day!

Rehydrate discs: Clinical studies show that inverted decompression increases the space between the vertebrae, allowing for rehydration if the soft tissue in the discs, increasing nutrients and plumping the discs for better shock absorption and flexibility.

Reduce nerve pressure: The height of the discs control the size of the passageway between each vertebrae for the nerve roots that exit the spinal column. A plump, hydrated disc allows for maximum clearance, helping to avoid pressure or painful pinching of the nerves.

Realign the spine: Decompression elongates the spine and eases muscle tension, encouraging realignment of the spine. Stretching and movement while inverted helps to facilitate relaxation, proper alignment and improved posture – Teeter’s bonus Healthy Back Routines are a helpful guide.

Relax tense muscles: Inversion helps to stimulate circulation and lymph flow, carrying waste out of sore, tense muscles. Gentle stretching and elongation of the muscles helps to ease muscle tension and stress.

Just like maintaining your dental health by brushing your teeth every day, you need to take care of your spine and joints. There is no miracle cure for back pain: pills mask the pain without addressing the source, and surgery is a risky, invasive and costly option. The Teeter Hang Ups is a natural, affordable, easy-to-use alternative you can use in your own home every day – backed by medical studies and endorsed by millions of people just like you.

Ease Stress

Stress and tension can cause pain and muscle spasms in the back, neck and shoulders, as well as headaches and other problems. Muscle tension can be aggravated by spinal misalignments, pinched or over-stimulated nerves, or toxin build-up due to poor circulation and lymph flow. Dr. John E. Sarno, of the New York Institute for Rehabilitation Medicine claims that in more than 90% of the patients that he sees for back pain, there is no structural abnormality or the ‘abnormal’ x-ray does not really explain the nature or location of the pain. Dr. Sarno explains how the tension causes back pain: The muscle tenses, reducing blood flow in the muscles of the neck, shoulders, back, or the buttocks. This allows the accumulation of waste chemicals, much the same way a long run causes leg muscle fatigue because of lactic acid build up. When the muscles goes into spasm in the lower back, it often leads you to believe (mistakenly) you have a disc problem.

A study conducted by physiotherapist L.J. Nosse1 found that EMG activity (a measure of muscle tension), declined over 35% within 10 seconds of inverting. Even at the shallow angle of 25 degrees on a Teeter, you can begin to feel the relaxing, stress-relieving benefits. Inversion can help to stimulate circulation which brings oxygen-rich blood to the muscles, and increases lymph flow to truck away toxins that build-up and cause muscle soreness.

Improve Joint Health

Decompression aids in joint lubrication by altering the pressure and suction forces within the joint, helping to stimulate the synovial fluid that nourishes the cartilage and enhances shock absorption.

Mobilization and gentle loading of ligaments can help to increase the collagen content of the tissue, which results in increased ligament strength. Strong ligaments and muscles are vital for proper joint support, and help to protect against injury. Even the U.S. Army has utilized Teeter Hang Ups EZ-Up<sup™< sup=””> Gravity Boots to mitigate joint fatigue injuries.

Increase Flexibility

Tight muscles or stiff joints create imbalances which can cause improper body mechanics and increase the risk of injury. Using a Teeter provides a natural stretch that gently elongates muscles and decompresses joints, enhancing muscle efficiency, improving mobility and increasing flexibility.

During a normal day, your fluid-filled joints and discs will be compressed and lose moisture, resulting in a temporary height loss of up to 0.5″ – 0.75″! While mostly reversed overnight, cumulative height loss over a lifetime can total 2” or more! With this loss of height comes decreased range of movement because there is less space in the joints. Inversion has been proven to increase the space between vertebrae and weight-bearing joints, reducing pressure and re-hydrating, which helps to restore shock absorption and flexibility.

Muscles adapt to bad posture. For example, slouch sitting shortens the muscles in the abdomen and lengthens those in the back. Eventually, it feels strange to sit or stand upright in good posture. Inversion helps realign the spine and elongate muscles, with many users reporting that they stand ‘taller’ and straighter after just a few minutes. With continued use, posture can be improved, which leads to better body mechanics, a more attractive figure and less back pain.

Work Out & Build Core Strength

Strong abdominals, internal and external obliques, and lower back muscles are vital for proper support of the spine. Most training activities designed to build core strength must be performed with great technical accuracy or they can injure the back.

Inverted exercises can target every core muscle without adding risky, compressive loads to the spine. Crunches or sit-ups on the Teeter are a challenging way to develop and define the core muscles. In addition, inverted squats provide a unique leg workout, strengthening the hamstrings and quads while sculpting the glutes. The bonus Healthy Back Routines include a 20+ minute class on inverted exercises you can do with your Teeter!

Yes, inversion therapy can in a limited capacity be beneficial to alleviate or reduce back pain. However, it’s not without its risks, costs and inconveniences that can be avoided using the Nubax® Trio.

According to Wikipedia, “People who have heart disease, high blood pressure, eye diseases (such as glaucoma), or are pregnant are at higher risk for the dangers related to inversion therapy and should consult their doctors about it first.” Wikipedia also states, “Combining an inversion table and acid reflux can be a painful, nauseating and potentially dangerous combination.”

With the Nubax® Trio, you can receive pain relief without the costs, physical awkwardness and potential health risks associated with inversion therapy.

Back Pain-Common Causes Of Back Pain And How To Avoid It

Back Pain-Common Causes Of Back Pain And How To Avoid It

One of the most common diagnosis in the world and here in the United States is back pain. Back pain affects 4 out of every 5 men and women, roughly 80 percent of the population at least once. Many cases of back pain can’t be stopped, accidents and conditions happen. Although this is true, a large percentage of back pain cases can be avoided and I’m going to teach you how in this article. Although it may be too late in your case, this can help you prevent back pain in the future. Learning what causes back pain can help you avoid it in the first place.

One common cause of back pain is heavy physical work. One of the reasons that heavy physical work is one of the leading causes of back pain in the world is due to the fact that there’s a lot of heavy physical jobs around the world. Jobs in construction is one great example of heavy physical work. Granted, some positions are worse then others but any type of job that requires physical work can leave you with many cases of back pain. It doesn’t take much to injure the back, injuries to muscles, ligaments and tendons are among some of the most common causes of back pain.

back musclesAnother common cause of back pain is heavy pushing and pulling. Just like jobs with heavy physical work, jobs with heavy pulling and pushing can lead to back pain as well. Both pushing and pulling can be hard on the back. One wrong step, a quick pull or heavy push can surely leave you with an injured back. There is a number of different things that require us to pull and push. For some of us, we may do this on a daily basis. If you’re not use to heavy physical activities, back injuries are sure to follow if your not careful. Muscular back pain is the most common type of back pain. Muscles and ligaments can easily be torn and cause you pain. The good news if any, for most cases, the pain only last for a few days/weeks.

One great idea for you to avoid this type of back pain is by making avoiding back pain routine in your life. If you have a job that requires heavy lifting, physical labor, you have to make proper lifting techniques routine in your life. Learn how to keep your elbows in and lift with your entire body. When picking up objects on the floor, keep your back straight rather then bending over. You need to bend with your knees, not your back. You have to practice everyday. Just like with anything that we do, practice makes perfect. If you continue to practice proper lifting and lifting with the body, you’ll save yourself a lot of pain in the future.

Bad posture is another preventable cause of back pain. In the new technology age, we’re constantly seeing more cases of back pain caused by back posture. How many of us our guilty for leading over to the computer? Guilty? I know I am. See, we get use to relaxing, especially when we are at home. In the office, we tend to have better posture but we still need help with posture at home and at work. Having a comfortable straight chair is a great start. Breaking old habit may be the biggest obstacle to you. Ever heard of the phrase, “practice what you preach?” If you continue to practice, you’ll become use to catching yourself when you display bad posture.

Healthy Postures

Repetitive hard work can also qualify as a cause for back pain. Any repetitive movement or actions with your back day in and day out can easily increase your chances for back pain. Heavy lifting, improper lifting, bending or twisting the wrong way equally increases your chances for injury. With so many leading causes of back pain, what can you do to prevent back pain? Decrease your chances of back pain? Is it even possible? Yes, of course it is possible, general awareness and knowledge can help you prevent back pain.

Knowledge plays a big role in measures that prevent back pain. For example, proper lifting techniques can help you prevent injury. Many people are unaware of proper lifting techniques, such as bending the knees and keeping your elbows against your sides when lifting. Make sure you lift with your legs, not your back. Don’t bend over to lift heavy items, bend your knees and then lift. All of these are safe, proper lifting techniques.

Another way that you can prevent back pain is with regular exercise. There’s a number of different back exercises that can help you with your pain. The key is getting your back and body use to the physical demand of physical work. In addition, back exercises build your back muscles. Your back will become stronger and your back will become more flexible. This can also help you avoid soreness in your muscles as well. Plus, general exercise is always healthy for you. If you can dedicate a few minutes for exercising a day, it can do wonders for your back. Stretching before lifting, pushing or pulling is important also. Before you do any demanding work, be sure to take extra time to stretch.

Stress can also cause back pain, is unhealthy and it has been proven that it can lead to death. One of those common problem areas is the lower back. The lower back is already stressed. The lower back supports the entire weight of the upper body. This is another reason that the lower back is prone to injury. Not only can stress affect the back, it can also affect other areas of your body. You really feel stress in the shoulders and neck. We all face stress and deal with stress in different ways. Relaxation techniques are great. Find what makes you happy. We stress over work, children, money, bills, family and many other things. You can avoid all the medical issues by learning how to control your stress.

I hope you take what you learned today and apply it to your life. Accidents are going to happen. Your going to pull muscles, tear ligaments, it’s a part of life. Most cases of back pain can be avoided by paying attention and using techniques that you’ve learned today and making them a part of your normal every day routine. We have hundreds of articles on back pain, posture, back pain causes and many more topics related to this subject.

Chronic Back Pain-What You Need To Know

Chronic Back Pain-What You Need To Know

Back Pain ReliefMillions of men and women around the World suffer from chronic back pain. Chronic back pain is back pain that last 3 months or longer. This type of back pain can last for months, years and decades. When left untreated, chronic back pain can get worse and lead to dangerous conditions. Thanks to continuous testing and medical advancements, we know that chronic back pain is a condition that needs to be treated. Your back pain should never be ignored, getting tested and treated as soon as possible is important.

Personally, I learned a lot about chronic back pain when I was studying to be a doctor. I learned even more about this condition because I suffered from it for more then a decade. I believe that qualifies me to make my case on the subject. A lot of different things made me nod my head and question our medical services here in the United States. I can only imagine how less fortunate countries are. I can’t begin to count how many times I saw a doctor, seen specialist and went through physical therapy. I remember how many nights I spent awake from the pain, how my pain controlled my life for many years. If there’s one doctor out there that knows how you feel, it is me.

Spinal Anatomy

The spine is an amazing work of art when everything is properly working. Your spinal anatomy consist of a variety of different bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles and nerve roots. The spine is a remarkable combination of strong bones, flexible ligaments and nerve roots. The back is incredibly strong, designed to support the weight of your upper body, yet flexible enough to provide great ranges of movement. When everything is working great, in a sense, we take it for granted. It’s just a back, right? When your spine causes pain, it’s a totally different story. We begin to search every resource that we can find to learn what could be causing our spine pain and discomfort. Unfortunately, there’s a lot of different things that can go wrong and cause spinal pain.

If you are experiencing lower back pain, upper back pain or neck pain, you should see the care of a doctor immediately. Your doctor will likely give you a physical exam and conduct some simple test to find the source of your pain. More then likely, you’ll need to take an X-ray to determine if there is any fractures or broken bones. Also, a MRI may be needed to determine the cause of your pain. CT scans are also another option. Be sure to tell your doctor exactly where you hurt because it can lead him closer to your diagnosis.

Spinal Regions

Spinal Regions

There’s four different regions that make up our spine. The four known regions of your spine are known as the Cervical (Neck), Thoracic (Middle Back), Lumbar (Lower Back) and the Sacrum. The Cervical has one main function, supporting the head. You have (7) Cervical vertebrae known as CL-C7. The main function of the Thoracic spine is to hold the rib cage and protect the heart and lungs. The twelve thoracic vertebrae are numbered T1 to T12. The range of motion in the thoracic spine is limited. The Lumbar is the main function of the lumbar spine is to bear the weight of the body. The five lumbar vertebrae are numbered L1 to L5. These vertebrae are much larger in size to absorb the stress of lifting and carrying heavy objects. The main function of the sacrum is to connect the spine to the hip bones (iliac). There are five sacral vertebrae, which are fused together. Together with the iliac bones, they form a ring called the pelvic girdle. You also have Coccyx, this region includes four fused bones of the coccyx or tailbone that provides attachment for ligaments and muscles of your pelvic floor. Please refer to the chart above for the specific regions for each.

Spinal Pain And Diagnostics

If you do experience spine pain, back pain or neck pain, you’ll need to visit your doctor immediately. You should never ignore your pain.

Spinal Pain Causes

Spinal pain can be causes by a variety of different things. One of the leading causes of spinal pain is injury. Although the spine is incredibly strong and supported by muscles and ligaments, it doesn’t take much for a back injury to occur. Pulled muscles are one of the most common causes of back pain. Any type of pulled muscle or torn ligaments can cause you back pain. Improper lifting and trauma to the back are often to blame for spinal pain.

Natural aging can also be the cause of your back pain. You have 30+ vertebrae that makes up your spine. In between each vertebrae, a disc is in place to support and protect your spine. As you age, your disc lose water and shrink. Eventually, you can have areas where vertebrae are rubbing one another. This is known as Degenerative Disc. This may or may not cause back pain. Everyone is different, some may experience back pain from degenerative disc while others do not. Osteoarthritis, one of the most common types of arthritis, can also be the culprit of your back or neck pain.

Herniated disc is another cause of spinal pain. Herniated disc can be caused by injury or natural aging. A herniated disk refers to a problem with one of the rubbery cushions (disks) between the individual bones (vertebrae) that stack up to make your spine. A herniated disk can irritate nearby nerves and result in pain, numbness or weakness in an arm or leg. On the other hand, some people experience no symptoms from a herniated disk. Most people who have a herniated disk don’t need surgery but in rare cases, it can be performed.

Spinal Stenosis can be a cause of spinal pain as well. Spinal stenosis is narrowing of the spinal column that causes pressure on the spinal cord, or narrowing of the openings (called neural foramina) where spinal nerves leave the spinal column. While some people have no signs or symptoms, spinal stenosis can cause pain, numbness, muscle weakness, and problems with bladder or bowel function.

Sciatica often causes lower back pain that extends into the hips, buttocks and legs. Sciatica symptoms occur when the large sciatic nerve is irritated. Sciatica can be a result of injury, such as a pinched nerve. Sciatica pain can be mild to severe. You may experience pain in a specific area with sciatica, depending on where the nerve is irritated.
