As we take a closer look at the causes of back pain, we find that sciatica is one of the leading causes of lower back pain and is one of the most common diagnosis. What is sciatica? What causes sciatica?

To answer your questions, sciatica is pain,  numbness or tingling produced by an irritation of the nerve roots that lead to the sciatica nerve. Your sciatica nerve is formed by nerve roots that leave the spinal cord and enter your lower back. These nerves run down the buttocks and down the back of the legs. From both legs, the nerve extends all the way down to both feet and ankles as you can see in the chart. If you experience pain in this area, you may have sciatica. For now, you can read on to determine if your symptoms relate to sciatica. For proper diagnosis of sciatica, you’ll have to see your doctor.

Sciatica Symptoms

What are the symptoms of sciatica? Sciatica pain, what does it feel like? Sciatica pain will usually start in your lower back. Gradually, your lower back pain will begin to run down your buttocks and down the back of the legs. You may feel numbness, tingling or weakness. You could be walking normally and one of your legs give out for a moment. Your feet may feel weird, almost like a tired feeling which relates to weakness.

If you have a job that requires you to stand for long periods at a time, your pain can get worse. The same can be said about jobs that require you to sit for long durations. Sciatica treatments can help you get pain relief by decompressing the spine and relieving the pressure on the nerve roots. Any type of movement has the ability to cause you pain, some more then others. You should stop what you’re doing because you could make your injury worse.

What Causes Sciatica 

Sciatica can be caused by a variety of different things. One of the most common causes of sciatica is herniated disc. Also known as bulging and ruptured disc, herniated disc can put pressure on the nerves leading to your sciatica nerve. If this occurs, you’re going to experience pain in the lower back, buttocks and the back legs. Sciatica pain can be severe or it can be minor, pain affects us all differently.

What else can cause sciatica? Another cause of sciatica can be spinal stenosis. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing in your spinal cord. When your spinal canal narrows, pressure is placed on your nerve roots. If spinal stenosis occurs in the nerve roots leading to the sciatica nerve, it will cause sciatica. Any type of injury or trauma can be the cause of sciatica also. Inflamed joints in your back can also lead to sciatica.

Sciatica Diagnosis

If you feel that you may have sciatica, in order to confirm, you’ll need to visit your doctor. Your doctor will likely do a medical history and physical exam on your body. Explaining where you hurt and what type of pain you’re feeling will help your doctor determine the cause of treatment and a proper diagnosis. Additional text such as X-rays or a MRI may be needed to determine the source of your sciatica.

Medical technology has come a long way in recent decades and we now have the equipment to pin point where pressure is being applied to your nerve roots. Hopefully, you have medical insurance because sciatica testing can become quite expensive. At anytime, if your conditions get worse, you should seek medical help immediately.

Sciatica Treatments

This is why you feel pain, it informs the brain that something wrong is going on. Would you ignore chest pain? Probably not and although the heart renders instant care over the back, this is still your natural chemistry telling you that something in your back is causing you pain.

Chronic Back Pain

Pain management has become an important aspect of medical care. Chronic back pain should NEVER be ignored. Did you know that pain is the number one cause of disability in the United States? It’s true, yet another reason why you shouldn’t ignore your back pain or pain in general. Any type of pain that last 3 to 6 months is classified as chronic pain. So, if you’ve been experiencing back pain for more then a half of year, you have chronic back pain. If left untreated, the pain and your condition can get worse.

Lower back pain is the most common type of back pain that you can have. Nearly 4 out of 5 people will experience back pain in their life, most will experience lower back pain. Your lower back is more mobile then your upper back. This is the main reason that most people experience lower back pain rather then upper back pain. Trauma and injury is one of the leading causes of back pain and can escalate to chronic back pain. Any type of injury to the back can cause pain, either minor or severe.

Variation Types Of Pain

Most pain is often classified as acute pain and chronic pain. Let’s look at the difference between acute pain and chronic pain. Acute pain is pain that comes suddenly or quickly brought on. Acute pain doesn’t last long, generally a few days to a few weeks. Acute pain is generally brought on by injury, such as tissue or muscle damage.

Chronic pain is pain that can last long periods at a time, from months to years. Chronic pain can be brought on by disease and medical conditions, such as osteoarthritis or degenerative disc disease. Chronic pain can be caused by injury but most chronic pain cases are often associated to the nerves.

Chronic pain can also refer to a variety of different things, most commonly disease and medical conditions. Chronic pain is the type of pain that persist three months or longer. Chronic pain can be caused by injury also, even though the injury may have healed properly. Since chronic pain often refers to nerves, pain signals in your body can last for weeks, months and years. Chronic pain can have many symptoms and cause many issue,  physically, mentally and emotionally.

It all depends on the type of patient and their condition. Chronic Back Pain Beginning

My journey with chronic back pain began when I was in middle school.  I developed a condition known as Osgood-Schlatter Disease in both of my knees.
