Most of the time our body movements do not cause problems, but it’s not surprising that symptoms develop from everyday wear and tear, overuse, or injury. Knee problems and injuries most often occur during sports or recreational activities, work-related tasks, or home projects.

The knee is the largest joint in the body. The upper and lower bones of the knee are separated by two discs (menisci). The upper leg bone (femur) and the lower leg bones (tibia and fibula) are connected by ligaments, tendons, and muscles. The surface of the bones inside the knee joint is covered by articular cartilage, which absorbs shock and provides a smooth, gliding surface for joint movement.

Although a knee problem is often caused by an injury to one or more of these structures, it may have another cause. Some people are more likely to develop knee problems than others. Many jobs, sports and recreation activities, getting older, or having a disease such as osteoporosis or arthritis increase your chances of having problems with your knees.

Injuries are the most common cause of knee problems. Sudden injuries may be caused by a direct blow to the knee or from abnormal twisting, bending the knee, or falling on the knee. Pain, bruising, or swelling may be severe and develop within minutes of the injury. Nerves or blood vessels may be pinched or damaged during the injury. The knee or lower leg may feel numb, weak, or cold; tingle; or look pale or blue. Acute injuries include:

  • A tear in the rubbery cushions of the knee joint (meniscus).
  • Ligament tears, such as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The medial collateral ligament (MCL) is the most commonly injured ligament of the knee.
  • Breaks (fracture) of the kneecap, lower portion of the femur, or upper part of the tibia or fibula. Knee fractures are most commonly caused by abnormal force, such as a falling on the knee, a severe twisting motion, severe force that bends the knee, or when the knee forcefully hits an object.
  • Kneecap dislocation. This type of dislocation occurs more frequently in 13- to 18-year-old girls.
  • Pieces of bone or tissue (loose bodies) from a fracture or dislocation that may get caught in the joint and interfere with movement.
  • Knee joint dislocation. This is a rare injury that requires great force. It is a serious injury and requires immediate medical care.

Overuse injuries occur with repetitive activities or repeated or prolonged pressure on the knee. Activities such as stair climbing, bicycle riding, jogging, or jumping stress joints and other tissues and can lead to irritation and inflammation. Overuse injuries include:

  • Inflammation of the small sacs of fluid that cushion and lubricate the knee (bursitis).
  • Inflammation of the tendons (tendinitis) or small tears in the tendons (tendinosis).
  • Thickening or folding of the knee ligaments (plica syndrome).
  • Pain in the front of the knee from overuse, injury, excess weight, or problems in the kneecap (patellofemoral pain syndrome).
  • Irritation and inflammation of the band of fibrous tissue that runs down the outside of the thigh (iliotibial band syndrome).

Lower back pain is one of the most common diagnosis of back pain. Over 80 percent of men and women will experience back pain at least once in their life. Most of that percentage will suffer from lower back pain. Low back pain is more common because your lower back is more mobile and flexible. On top of that, the lower back supports the entire weight of the upper back. Since your low back is so flexible, it is more prone to injury. Today, we’re going to take the time to look at some lower back exercises that you can use to help relieve your lower back pain and help strengthen your lower back.

Abdominal Contraction

  • Lie on your back with knees bent and hands resting below ribs.
  • Tighten abdominal muscles to squeeze ribs down toward back.
  • Be sure not to hold breath.
  • Hold 5 seconds.
  • Relax.
  • Repeat 10 times.

Ankle Pumps

  • Lie on your back.
  • Move ankles up and down. Repeat 10 times.
  • Repeat 10 times

Hamstring Stretch

  • Lie on your back with legs bent.
  • Hold one thigh behind knee.
  • Slowly straighten knee until a stretch is felt in back of thigh.
  • Hold 20 seconds.
  • Relax.
  • Repeat 5 times on each side.

Heel Raises

  • Stand with weight even on both feet.
  • Slowly raise heels up and down.
  • Repeat 10 times.

Heel Slides

  • Lie on your back.
  • Slowly bend and straighten knee.
  • Repeat 10 times.

Hip Flexor Stretch

  • Lie on your back near edge of bed, holding knees to chest.
  • Slowly lower one leg down, keeping knee bent, until a stretch is felt across top of the hip/thigh.
  • Hold 20 seconds.
  • Relax.
  • Repeat 5 times on each side.

Lay on Ball Stomach

  • Lie on your stomach over ball
  • Slowly raise alternate arms over head.
  • Slowly raise alternate legs 2 to 4 inches from floor.
  • Combine 1 and 2, alternating opposite arms and legs.
  • Bend one knee. Slowly lift this leg up, alternating right and left legs.

Lumbar Stabilization Exercise With Swiss Ball

  • Lie on stomach over ball.
  • ” Walk ” hands out in front of ball until ball is under legs. Reverse to starting position.
  • ” Walk ” hands out in front of ball until ball is under legs and slowly raise alternating arms over head.
  • ” Walk ” hands out in front of ball and slowly perform push-ups

Piriformis Stretch

  • Lie on back with both knees bent.
  • Cross one leg on top of the other.
  • Pull opposite knee to chest until a stretch is felt in the buttock/hip area.
  • Hold 20 seconds.
  • Relax.
  • Repeat 5 times each side.

Sitting Ball Exercises

  • Sit on ball with hips and knees bent 90°and feet resting on floor.
  • Slowly raise arm over head and lower arm, alternating right and left sides.
  • Slowly raise and lower heel, alternating right and left sides.
  • Slowly raise one heel and raise opposite arm over head. Alternate opposite arm and heel.
  • Marching: Slowly raise one foot 2 inches from floor, alternating right and left sides.

Standing Ball Exercises

  • Stand with ball between your low back and wall.
  • Slowly bend knees 45 ° to 90 ° . Hold 5 seconds. Straighten knees.
  • Slowly bend knees 45 ° to 90 ° while raising both arms over head.

While there is no miraculous instant weight loss trick, you can take steps to speed things along without resorting to a quick weight loss diet. Here’s how:


Rev Your Metabolism with the Right Foods

Are you eating too many calories? The problem might be that you’re eating too few. Years of yo-yo dieting can slow down your metabolism by 30%. To get it back on track, you’ll need to eat enough calories to fuel your basal metabolic rate (BMR).

You can find detailed BMR calculators online. They will tell you how many calories you need to get through a day. If you exercise or have a physically demanding job, you will need more. Try to get most of your calories from lean protein, whole grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables.
